Fishing, Photos And Charity 9/12/2005

Sure, Kelly Jordon isn't under the gun now like he is in the midst of the Bassmaster and FLW tour seasons. Nope, no pressure at all. But he still puts in plenty of hours outside – either on charity trips, photo shoots or dove hunts.

He loves the great outdoors and looks forward to any time he can spend with a rod or gun.

Saltwater Lucky Craft

While Jordon is one of the highest-profile anglers in the pro bass ranks, he also likes to take time to hunt bull reds and speckled trout along the Texas coast.

"I was recently out on the Texas coast to try out a few new Lucky Craft lures," he said. "My buddies Cody Bird and Doug Cox were along to have fun and see how the new lures would perform.

"Of course, the topwater lures worked well," he added. "Lucky Craft makes awesome topwater baits. But there's one lure that's kind of a jerkbait without a lip that really smoked the speckled trout. It's called the Wander. It has this real erratic motion as it shoots around like a baitfish. The speckled trout really crushed it. There were so many fish on it the paint finally was scraped off."

Dove Swarm

Like many anglers, Jordon also enjoys to hunt. When dove season opened in early September in Texas, he took down some doves on camera.

"I had the opportunity to be on the television show Fishing and Hunting Texas," he said. "I was the guest along with Alton Jones and his son Alton, Jr. We smoked so many doves, it was unbelievable.

"I've seen those television shows when the hosts are in Argentina and they're surrounded by what seems like billions of doves," he added. "Up until this trip, I've never experienced anything like it. When I would hunt mourning doves in west Texas, I'd get my fair share, but these were the white-winged doves. They flew around in flocks of a hundred or so only 20 feet off the ground.

"We had no problem getting our limits of 12 apiece," he said. "I decided to use a 410 shotgun against the other guys using a 12 gauge. That's kind of like a guy using fly fishing gear against someone with regular equipment. It's a real disadvantage. My 410 performed great. I hit a double and they landed like yard darts right into the ground."

Photo Shoot Time

Fortunately for Jordon, he lives near Lake Fork in Texas. This big-bass factory is ideal for photo shoots since the subjects are often so stout.

"The guys from Minn Kota are coming down for a photo shoot," he said. "It's great that they chose to shoot here. I just need to go out and catch a few big fish.

"In another couple of weeks I'll be heading to Lake Guntersville for a Lucky Craft shoot," he added. "Since there are no tour events at this time, it allows for us to get some good photo shoots done in the early fall."

> Jordon pitches in to help troubled youth. "I'll head to Michigan later this month to participate in a charity fishing event," he said. "The charity is called Lifeline. It's set up to help throwaway kids or kids that have been orphaned and are in the system and have been forgotten. The charity helps give them a last chance to become part of our society."
