January 28, 2007 - Clewiston, Florida.
Competing against a field of 200 professional anglers, Joe Thomas placed 7th and pocketed $18,000 with a four-day catch of 40 pounds and 4 ounces in the inaugural FLW BP Eastern Series Tournament on Lake Okeechobee in Clewiston, Florida.
Thomas leapt into the finals on Day 3, moving from 75th to 8th place with a 5 fish limit of 17.5 pounds, including a 7 pound 2 ounce largemouth.
Stated Thomas on stage the final day; “I caught every bass, probably 100 over the four days, on one bait...a
Lucky Craft Slender Pointer 112 MR suspending jerkbait, fished on 14-pound Vanish fluorocarbon line. I think the reaction strike was really the key, and that’s why this bait was so effective even after the cold front.”
Thomas targeted deep canals where he paralleled the steep, rocky shoreline drops fishing in 2-6 feet of water. This pattern differed drastically from the majority of the field who chose to fish in the shallow main-lake vegetation, which averaged less than 18 inches in depth.
Added Thomas, “It was great to have a good start in my first FLW event of the year. I’m looking forward to fishing the FLW Tour and Series this season, and chronicling each and every event on my television show “Angler on Tour” which airs on The Outdoor Channel.”
